Child Proofing Your Yard and Play Area
Most new parents think about child proofing their home and nursery, and they think about things to put into the car to make rides safe and enjoyable for their new baby. However, they often forget that once that baby is going to be outside, there are hazards all over the place. Mom or Dad will not allow baby outside alone, of course, but they may be so focused on keeping baby out of the road, off of high places, and away from strangers that they may not see the small things that can hurt a child outside in the backyard. Take a little time and make sure everything is up to par.
If you have a fence, or are thinking of adding fence, this is one big child proofing area in which you should use great care. You want something secure, but also something that is not easily climbed by a child. Make it high enough to keep them in the area you have set aside for them, and also make sure there are no big gaps between the bottom of the fence and the ground. They could try to crawl through there and get stuck. Child proofing your fence also means making sure old fences have no broken links or planks, and that are parts are as strong as they need to be.

Child proofing your lawn is about insects as well. There are the usual suspects that are just a part of life, but there are some that can be dangerous. Know what nests and other insect homes look like so you can eliminate them before your child accidentally stumbles upon them. You can’t clear everything up, but you can find some problems that need to be eliminated.
You also have to think about the toys you are going to have out in your lawn or garden when thinking about child proofing. Even new toys can have problems. You are not going to leave your baby alone in the yard with the toys, of course, but you should check everything for sharp edges, anything that could be pulled off to become a choking hazard, and toys that are going to pose any other type of danger to your baby. Children should have fun, but toys are just not made the way that they use to be.
While you are spending your time child proofing, spend some time thinking of things that are going to keep your kids happy and moving. Buy safe toys that encourage motion and activity, and don’t forget the favorites like the sand box and perhaps a kiddy pool. Save the swing sets and tree houses for when the children are a bit older, as that is just one more set of things you have to worry about child proofing. As long as you have given everything your attention, you can relax and enjoy your time outdoors in the lawn together without too much worry.
Keeping your baby safe is something you worry about, but this will be an even bigger worry when your baby enters the toddler years. They are mobile, more curious, and they have no idea what could hurt them and what is safe. This is a time in life when they test their limits in just about everything, and try everything at least once just to see what happens. This means you have to think about toddler safety and prevention. Some things are going to happen in a moment, but there are other things of which you can prepare to avoid some of the more common accidents that can happen.
Thinking about toddler safety means thinking like a toddler. This is not something that most people think about, but if you can put yourself in their state of mind, you can see what could be a problem. You may even want to get down to their eye level to see what they see.
Stairs, doorways, and windows are all toddler safety issues. They do not know they are going to get hurt if they plunge down the stairs, they just know that is where Daddy went and they want to go too. Stairway gates are a critical safety item you should have. Your Baby doesn’t know that if they lean too far out a window they may fall to the ground and get hurt. They don’t know that a cord from the blinds could choke them very easily. They just want to explore. Think like that and you can find ways to avoid problems before they happen.
Remember that though toddler safety is a number one priority, you don’t want to child proof everything in your home or in your life. Your child or children have to learn to listen to and respond properly to the word ‘no.’ This means leaving some things open but being watchful, and telling them ‘no’ when they get into something they should not. They will soon learn about boundaries and when an adult means business. If you child proof everything in the name of toddler safety, they are never going to learn anything. Keep the important and very dangerous things locked up, or keep them our of a room using Baby Fences and or BabyGates, but still keep some things open for learning as well.
